"What will happen after graduation?" This concern will not be a source of anxiety, and it might not even require graduating from university. I came across a list of the top 10 jobs expected to be in high demand in the next 10 years. It’s from a report published last month by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (USA). Here's the list:
- Wind Turbine Service Technician
- Solar Panel Installer
- Occupational Therapy Assistant
- Physical Therapist Assistant
- Home Health and Personal Care Aide
- Massage Therapist
- CNC Operator
- Physical Therapist Aide
- Forest Fire Inspector and Prevention Specialist
- Personal Development Instructor (it’s referred to as “self-enrichment teacher,” which could be translated as personal development / self-help / hobby teacher, but I know none of these are exact matches)
Now let’s take a look at the top 10 fastest-growing jobs in the next 10 years:
- Wind Turbine Service Technician
- Practical Nurse
- Solar Panel Installer
- Statistician
- Physical Therapist Assistant
- Information Security Analyst
- Home Health and Personal Care Aide
- Health Services Manager
- Data Scientist
- Doctor Assistant
I read this list and made some notes for myself. Here’s a brief overview of my thoughts:
- First, the phrase “vocational high school is a matter of national importance” came to my mind. The importance of vocational high schools and the need for investment in them should be brought to the agenda. Associate degree programs should be strengthened and promoted.
- Renewable natural resources, clean energy, and green energy will be even more present in our agenda. The changing and continuously evolving energy sector and its new dynamics need to be learned urgently.
- The needs in the healthcare sector seem to be growing and evolving. Home healthcare will become even more important, and the age range of service recipients will expand. I’m not sure how the segmentation will develop, but I will be following it closely.
- Physical Therapist Assistant appears in both lists; the first list also includes Occupational Therapy Assistant and Massage Therapist. With the increase in sedentary lifestyle due to remote work and quarantine, our pain levels have increased. It seems these pains will continue in the next 10 years. But it’s important not to think of this just in terms of pain, injury, or disability. I interpret these jobs as steps toward improving our quality of life.
- The job of Forest Fire Inspector and Prevention Specialist on the list is a bit frightening. After the trauma we experienced last summer, seeing this role on the list is quite unsettling.
