Mobbing what is it?

Researchers and academics working on mobbing use different terms (such as workplace bullying, intimidation), but they also define them differently.

I am sharing my favorite definitions below:

“systematic, frequently repeated, hostile and unethical behaviors of one or more people, usually directed at one person, that last for a certain period of time (at least 6 months) and that cause the person to become defenseless and helpless” (Leymann)

“behaviors that are unwanted by the victim, intentionally or unconsciously, repeated, clearly cause humiliation, guilt and distress, and can affect work performance and the work environment” (Einarsen and Raknes)

“continuous malicious acts, unfounded accusations, shaming, "intimidation efforts to remove the victim from the workplace by means such as damage to reputation" (Davenport, Schwartz, and Elliott)

What are the conditions for us to define a process as "mobbing"?

  1. The first of the unchangeable characteristics of the concept of mobbing is that the process takes place in the workplace and occurs among employees in the same workplace.
  2. Mobbing is directed at a specific target (one person or more than one person).
  3. It is critical that the behaviors include disturbing, unethical or hostile actions that are perceived negatively by the victim.
  4. Negative and hostile behaviors must be repeated, continuous and regular It should be a behavior directed at you. It is not a one-time situation. According to some sources, the frequency of encountering negative behaviors is at least once a week. Therefore, mobbing is a systematic process.
  5. Negative behaviors are continuous (they are said to continue for at least 6 months, but the duration may vary depending on the nature and intensity of the behaviors).
  6. The existence of power inequality between the parties (mobbing perpetrator and victim/exposed) (such as hierarchy, number) and the victim having difficulty coping with the situation are the distinguishing features of the mobbing process.
